Nxera today launched its 58MW DC Tuas data centre, one of the largest colocation data centres in Singapore. And it's already 90% committed before launch.

DC Tuas data centre

Singtel Group's Nxera today announced the opening of DC Tuas, its largest data centre and among the largest multi-tenanted facilities in Singapore. It delivers 58MW of IT load, a PUE of 1.25 at full load, BCA Green Mark Platinum certification, eight stories, and 120,000 sq ft of space.

Located at 7A Tuas Avenue 3, DC Tuas is the only data centre in Singapore to be integrated with a cable landing station. Singtel claims it has the highest power density in the country.

Interestingly, earlier reports at the time DC Tuas was announced mentioned 80kW per rack, while its website cited support for "up to 50kW" per rack. Today's press release didn't mention rack density.

Consolidation of data centres

Nxera was formed in 2023 as the infrastructure arm of Singtel's regional data centre business through a strategic partnership with global investment firm KKR.

In 2024, Singtel said it is closing down five data centres: Kim Chuan Data Centre 1, NCS Hub (AMK), Comcentre 3, Telepark DC, and NCS Bedok. The Nxera Sustainability Summary Report later revealed the reason: new data centres are simply more sustainable.

The report also noted: "We are phasing out our five older data centres and consolidating the IT power allocation into our next-generation DC Tuas." This ongoing consolidation could go some way towards explaining how 90% of DC Tuas is committed before launch.

I've previously heard that DC Tuas was given the green light before Singapore's implicit moratorium of 2019, long before it was officially unveiled in August 2023. It is not clear if the complexity of building out an existing cable landing station meant additional time to design and build.

What next?

KKR and Singtel last week announced the acquisition of STT GDC, which has over 100 data centres and 2.3GW of capacity in the region. I shared my thoughts about this development last week, which I think strengthens both of them.

The only question left on my mind is: will KKR and Singtel keep the Nxera and STT GDC brands and operations separate, or is an eventual merger on the horizon?
