Singapore is still very much in the data centre game

Three takeaways from an evening of non-stop conversations with data centre leaders.

As over 200 top data centre executives and professionals gathered at the w.media Asia Awards 2025 last Friday, here's what I picked up.

It was an evening of non-stop conversations as I caught up with old friends and met new contacts from the data centre industry. Here are three things I could share.

Singapore's data centres

If there's one thing that's clear, it's how Singapore remains very much in the game for data centres. Case in point: the recently announced DC-CFA2, with 200MW up for new data centres, is small in comparison to capacity elsewhere.

But really, which player in the room isn't involved in some form or other?

Massive manpower crunch

The incredible surge of data centres in the region has created a severe manpower crunch that is making itself felt. A CEO told me how hard it was to hire, even as experienced team players are being hired away.

Singapore's renewables play

Singapore has a strategy, and it fully intends to bring it to completion. I've previously written about its plan to build a green energy hub and unlock sustainable data centre growth.

So Singapore hasn't thrown in the towel; it has merely embarked on an entirely different game that could potentially see it leap ahead.

I plan to write more about the DC-CFA2 this week, so stay tuned.
