Singapore-based Digital Edge has announced a 100MW data centre in Thailand, with plans to build a series of data centres in the country.

Digital Edge and Thai power company B.Grimm Power yesterday announced a joint venture to develop AI-ready data centre campuses in Thailand.

100MW data centre

The first data centre is a greenfield 100MW facility located within Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), which will be fast-tracked with RFS in Q4 2026.

Not much else is mentioned, beyond a smorgasbord of keywords suggesting that it will simultaneously serve hyperscalers, AI workloads, and enterprises.

Considering that the fitting out for each category of customers is quite different, this suggests that Digital Edge might be building ahead of demand in a calculated bet.

Thailand on the rise

Thailand has long aspired to be a data centre hub, and I can remember optimism on that front spanning almost a decade.

But while it has a robust data centre sector, it never achieved its full potential befitting its location next to multiple regional markets, cost effectiveness, and other advantages.

The winds of change might finally be here. I'm increasingly hearing of plans to build data centres in Thailand, even as things slow down slightly in Johor.

Most data centres in Thailand are located around Bangkok and its metropolitan area, though the EEC - particularly Chonburi and Rayong, is emerging as a secondary hub.

Access to power

Like elsewhere, access to power is the primary limiting factor to the massive data centres being planned in Thailand. This is where the JV with B.Grimm Power makes perfect sense.

B.Grimm Power not only has access to renewable power in Thailand but is a key player in the country’s clean energy. This essentially guarantees access to power.

The data centre landscape in Thailand is evolving quickly. The Thai government also actively supporting the data centre sector in various ways.

Some initiatives include:

  • Smart grid policy for large-scale renewables.
  • Green electricity rates from all three state utilities.
  • An ongoing pilot for direct PPA of up to 2,000MW.

The way I see it, Thailand is attempting to leapfrog regional data centre competition by leveraging its transition to renewables.
