Digital Edge, in partnership with B.Grimm Power, on Thursday broke ground on a 100MW campus in Thailand, marking the largest data centre project for Digital Edge.

100MW data centre in Chonburi

Located in Chonburi within Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), the new data centre campus is part of a 50-50 joint venture between Digital Edge and B.Grimm Power.

The Chonburi facility is the flagship of a US$1 billion investment plan to deliver hyperscale and AI-ready data centre campuses across the country. According to the official release, it has a target Ready-for-Service date of Q4 2026, with at least one news site citing 48MW for the first phase.

Some of the largest developments in Thailand, including projects by Google, DayOne, and Bridge Data Centres, are located in Chonburi, about 100km southeast of Bangkok. This clustering effect is reminiscent of recent data centre developments in Johor and elsewhere.

It's worth noting that Chonburi does have a history of flash floods during heavy rain. However, such events are short-lived, and a reader, Sam Lu, noted that the site for the Digital Edge data centre sits 30 metres above sea level, which means flooding isn't an issue.

Digital Edge's rapid expansion

Digital Edge DC has quickly expanded across Asia since its launch in 2020, with some 24 data centres in operation or under construction across 9 markets. To my understanding, Digital Edge targets both hyperscalers and enterprises. At 100MW, the Chonburi data centre will be the largest in its portfolio.

On its part, Thailand could be at the tipping point to become the next Johor with off-the-charts growth. The parallels are striking: major players clustering in specific locations, massive capacity announcements, and infrastructure being built ahead of demand.

What we're seeing is a bet that Thailand's combination of available land, government support through the EEC, and relatively stable power grid can support the next wave of Southeast Asian data centre growth.

What do you think? Is Thailand ready for this level of data centre development?
