About Paul Mah

It was 2023 when I had a startling realisation. I had produced a great deal of content for scores of publications and clients, but I'd never actually written for myself. It got me thinking about what I would write simply for the pleasure of it.

Or put another way, what would I write if I were a retiree? Sadly, I am still far from being able to retire. Nevertheless, that moment of epiphany kicked off an adventure where I started writing posts every day on LinkedIn.

Around a year later, in 2024, I decided to republish what I wrote on this website. I wanted to ensure that what I've spent so much effort writing remains accessible outside LinkedIn, is searchable, and easy to link from my weekly newsletter.

Life in the tech lane

Why should you believe what I write?

My fascination with technology began the moment I laid my hands on my first PC. That early spark set me on a path to becoming an IT professional, where I worked in various roles, from system administration and programming to managing a small IT team.

Then I discovered my passion for writing through a side hustle that turned me into an accidental freelancer. Before long, I had quit my IT job and was writing for some of the largest enterprise tech publications around the world. Since starting this journey in 2008, I’ve not only written extensively but have also moderated over a hundred panels and roundtable discussions.

Muck Rack says I've written over 2,100 bylines, though it only goes back 12 years and is missing at least half a dozen publications. I estimate another 2,000 articles unaccounted for, though I'll never know for certain.

Publications that still host some of my work include Ars Technica, South China Morning Post, Computerworld, Data Center Dynamics, Small Business Computing, IT Business Edge and TechRepublic.

About a decade ago, I started doing B2B writing alongside my editorial work. I've worked with marketing agencies, PR firms, and directly with enterprise companies. Clients include one of the largest banks here, major telecommunications providers, global technology firms, and a government agency. This made up 75% of my work in recent years.

B2B writing gave me the chance to work on a wide variety of content from white papers, content for ABM campaigns to EDMs, website copy, and thought leadership pieces. I also copyedited articles for scientists and engineers.

I believe my training and experience enable me to quickly identify key insights and salient points, allowing me to craft compelling stories that are both factual and technically accurate.

My day job

These days, I work in a fractional capacity, helping companies strategise and manage their content. I also collaborate with editorial teams.

I continue to write professionally for both businesses and editorial publications. The latter gives me flexibility with my time and keeps me sharp on the latest technological developments.

This blend of strategic consulting and hands-on writing allows me to stay connected to both the business side of content and the craft itself.
